The Transition (2025)

Hunter's life is at a turning point: after years of fighting his father for it, he's finally gotten top surgery. And he’s just starting to feel comfortable in his own skin . . . only to be attacked by a strange creature in his backyard.

The encounter should have killed him, but his best friend Gabe intervened, and Hunter was able to walk away from the incident with his life— and new body— mostly intact. Only something isn't right. First, his wounds are healing quickly—too quickly. Then there are the feverish nightmares, the sudden return of his period, and his teeth—they’re falling out of his head.

Enter Mars, Hunter's other best friend. A horror movie aficionado, Mars points out the obvious: that mysterious creature was a werewolf, and now Hunter is becoming one, too. The only way out now is to figure out a cure— which may be killing the creature that bit him.

As the three friends race against time, a voice that could only belong to the creature itself begins to worm its way inside Hunter’s head. And it promises revenge on Hunter’s transphobic peers if he succumbs to his lycanthropic transformation. Or he can reject the monster and fight alongside his friends before the body— and life— he's fought so hard for slips away for good. The choice is Hunter’s.

Trade Reviews & Press

★ Publisher's Weekly

"A transgender teen’s recovery from top surgery takes a terrifying turn in this high-adrenaline horror novel from Kisner... a thrilling, provocative parable about body dysmorphia and transformation both earthly and mythical."

Booklist

"Kisner combines werewolf lore, visceral body horror, and queer coming-of-age in this original transgender horror novel about identity, bodily autonomy, and self-love….ending with a much-needed message of acceptance, that ‘our lives were always worth living.'”

School Library Journal

"An interesting vantage point into the idea of feeling out of control of one’s body and the emotional fallout it can cause... a recommended purchase for libraries looking to enhance their YA supernatural and LGBTQIA+ collections at the same time.

"Buckle up for lots of werewolf mythology, moody teens making poor decisions, and body horror as a metaphor for transformation of all types. Grim but emotional and timely."

"Needless to say, Kimura loves a monster book, and since this cat actually likes seeing dogs, he definitely won’t shy from werewolves. A trans werewolf story? Brb, getting the zoomies to the bookstore. "
